Is a Kochi Houseboat Day Trip Worth It Compared to Alappuzha

You are staying in Kochi, you want to see the backwaters, and someone has offered you a houseboat that leaves from near the city. The question is whether that is the same thing as going to Alappuzha, or a lesser version of it.

Short answer. If you have one day and you are based in Kochi, take the Kochi option and enjoy it for what it is. If you have a full day or an overnight to spare, go to Alappuzha or Kumarakom, because the water there is what people mean when they say Kerala backwaters.

What is actually different

The backwater system runs a long way down the coast, but it does not look the same everywhere.

Around Kochi the water is a working harbour system: wide channels, cargo movement, ferry crossings, bridges, industry on the banks and city on the horizon. There are quiet stretches and there are pretty ones, but you are on a busy urban waterway.

Around Alappuzha the water is narrow canal and open lake, with paddy fields sitting below water level, coir villages along the banks and very little else. That view is the reason the region is famous, and Kochi does not have it.

Travel time

Alappuzha is a drive south from Kochi on a road that is heavily built up for much of the way. Allow considerably longer than the distance suggests, in both directions, and more again if you are travelling on a weekend or during festival season.

That is the real cost of the Alappuzha option. On a single day trip you can easily spend more of your day in a car than on a boat. A Kochi departure removes almost all of that, which is its main argument.

Boat traffic

Alappuzha is busy. In peak season the main canal routes carry a large number of houseboats, and there are stretches where you are in a queue of them. The experience is still good, but it is not solitary, and photographs that show one boat alone on empty water were mostly taken away from the main routes.

Kochi has fewer houseboats but more of everything else, including ferries, cargo and fishing craft. Neither option gives you an empty waterway in season.

If quiet matters to you more than the classic scenery, ask specifically about the smaller canal routes and shikara boats rather than a large houseboat. A small boat gets into channels a houseboat cannot enter.

Price

Prices vary by operator, by boat, by season and by how you book, so treat any figure you are quoted as one data point rather than the market rate. What is generally true:

• Day cruises cost less than overnight stays, and shared boats cost less than private ones.
• Small boats cost far less than houseboats and often give you a better view of village life.
• Peak season and holiday weekends carry higher rates than the monsoon months.
• Agents, hotels and boat owners all quote differently for the same boat.

Get more than one quote, confirm exactly how many hours are on the water rather than the total booking window, and confirm whether food is included before you agree to anything. Rates drop in the wet months, and it is worth knowing what still runs in Alappuzha when the canals rise before you book a monsoon date.

Which one to pick

• Half a day free, based in Kochi: take a Kochi departure, or take the public ferry and the water metro instead and spend almost nothing.
• One full day: Alappuzha is doable, but expect a long drive at each end. Leave early, and compare it against the other day trips out of Kochi ranked by travel time before you commit the whole day.
• Two days or an overnight: go to Alappuzha or Kumarakom, stay the night on a boat or on the bank, and take a small boat out in the early morning. The early morning is the best part and a day trip almost never includes it.

One more option

There is a middle path people forget. The Kochi water metro and the older public ferries cross the same harbour for a fraction of the price of any tour, on a fixed timetable, and give you a genuine hour on the water. It is not a backwater cruise. It is a very good, very cheap way to see the harbour if your day is already full. And if the water is not really the reason you came, two days in Kozhikode for someone who likes history is a different trip worth weighing up.
